On this Independence special on Coke Studio@MTV Season 4, Punjabi legend Gurdas Maan, present a song called Ki Banu Duniya Da. He re-writes it here, adding a stellar performance by current Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh. This exclusive track, arranged by Jatinder Shah, sees a massive collaboration of these big names of Punjabi music, reiterating a message for the youth that speaks about not forgetting your roots, in this age of modernity. Especially picking on themes like drug-abuse, disenchantment amongst the youth and the future of our nation, the lyrical punch is delivered using a traditional verse, with additional lyrics written by Gurdas Maan himself. Catch this powerhouse performance on this brand new season of Coke Studio@MTV!
I have tried to translate the lyrics to English so that non-Punjabi speakers can understand. Please note it's not a complete word to word translation, rather a inside meaning is being defined. Please let me know in case something is not understood or wrong. Leave your comments or mail me at: instantkhichri@gmail.com I'll rectify the content.
Lyrics:
Aaj Ranjhe kiraye te le le ke heeran
(These days Relationships are temporary, one night stands)
Ishqe Di chadar kari jaan leeran
(Ruining the beauty of relationships, destroying the meaning of love)
Hotel te bhele ch churi khawa ke
(Spending few bucks in hotel or restaurants is defining the needs)
Ae majiyan charani kidhar ja rahi hai
(Ranjha use to herd cattle for so many years just to see Heer. That was kind of love missing these days)
Ae chad di jawani kidhar ja Rahi hai
(Where exactly the youth is heading ? We are ruining it completely)
Ae husano deewani kidhar ja rahi hai
(Beauty and youth is not forever, it's not going in right direction)
Ghaghre vi gaye phulkariyan vi gaiyan
(Ghaghra [Traditional Clothing] and Phulkari [embroidery technique from the Punjab region] is lost )
Kaan na vich kokru te valiyan vi gaiyan
(Old or tribal, traditional ornaments also can't be seen in ears these days)
Ghaghre vi gaye phulkariyan vi gaiyan
Kaan na vich kokru te valiyan vi gaiyan
Reshmi dupatte dore jaaliyan vi gayian
(Silk material Dupatta- Girls wear with suits) , strings and suits with nets are lost)
Ghun vi gaye te ghund vaalian vi gayian
(veils can't be seen, and even the shame is gone)
Chal paye valaiti baane
(Western clothing is being preferred now instead of our traditional clothing)
Ki banu … O ki banu
O ki banu duniya da
What's gonna happen to this world (our culture, traditions or rather Punjab) now
Sache patshah Waheguru jaane
(Only Our God or Guru's know)
ki banu duniya da
Sache patshah Waheguru jaane
ki banu duniya da
Sache patshah Waheguru jaane
ki banu duniya da
Sache patshah Waheguru jaane
Ki banu duniya da haye ….
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
(No literal meaning of this: This is just to make verse poetic) however
Jugni is an age-old narrative device used in Punjabi folk music in India, Pakistan, literally means 'Female Firefly')
Haye taariya vi teri jugni
Sai Bodaan vaalian ve jugni
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
(Writer is referring different poets, guru's and god like symbols to address them )
Now Writer addressing a beautiful village girl or Women is walking:
Sir utte matka khoohi de paani da
(carrying Earthen pot full with water taken from well)
Taap keda jhalle athri jawaani da
(Who can handle your beautiful and uncontrollable youth)
Jede passe jaavein thumkaaran paindian
(Where ever you go, you just shake the floor)
Addi naal teriyan pajebaan khendian
(Each step makes beautiful sound of anklet)
Vadiye majaajane majaaj bhul gayi
(Oh Beautiful young women, you have forgotten your traditional styles)
Gidhiyaan di raani fashionaan ch rul gayi
(You forgot your traditional dance and now following fashion of Western world)
Sundi angrezi gaane
(And you only listen to English songs, ignoring and have dislike for our traditional folk music)
What's gonna happen to this world (our culture, traditions or rather Punjab) now
Only Our God or Guru's know.
O Ki banu … O ki banu
O ki banu duniya da
Sache patshah Waheguru jaane
ki banu duniya da
Sache patshah Waheguru jaane
ki banu duniya da haye ….
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
Haye taariya vi teri jugni
Sai Bodaan vaalian ve jugni
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
Saanu sauda ni pugda
(This deal is not good/profitable for us) -- Line is added to make the verse poetic
Saanu sauda ni pugda
Raavi toh Chenab puchda
(Two rivers (Ravi and Chenab) of Punjab (India and Pakistan) are talking to each other)
Raavi toh Jhanaab puchda
Ki haal ae Sutluj da
(Asking about the condition of third River (Sutlej) flows between Indian and Pakistan.
Ki haal ae Sutluj da
Writer is addressing the lost of beauty of holy rivers because of partition and issues of borders.
Now Writer is addressing the villages of Peshawar Pakistan which were once part of one country, and now seperated, that how far things have become.
Painde dur Peshawar’an de oye
(Villages of Peshawar are far)
Painde dur Peshawar’an de oye
Painde dur Peshawar’an de oye
Painde dur Peshawar’an de oye
Roads have been frogotten because of borders and writer is looking for way to Lahore.. ( Poetic Feeling)
O Wagah de border te.. O wagah de border te
(Wagah: Border between India(Amritsar) and Pakistan)
Raah puchdi Lahore’an de haye
(Asking about way to Lahore)
Raah puchdi Lahore’an de
Painde dur Peshawar’an de oye
Painde dur Peshawar’an de oye
Painde dur Peshawar’an de oye
Painde dur Peshawar’an de oye
(Poetic -- Fun )
Hello hello ,
Hello
Hello
Hello Hello
Hello Hello
Hello Hello thank you karan nadiyan
( we address everyone these days by Hello and hi and not by traditional way of addressing people like Sat Sri Akal, or Namaste)
aa gaiyan valeton angrez vadiyan
(Now we have become westerners)
i don’t like the punjabi hindi nu
(Youth these days doesn't like their own Punjabji or Hindi Language, instead running for learning English only). Feel low or insulted using their own language.
sharam ni aundi sanu gallan dindi nu
(They are insulting and abusing their own tradtions, language and culture )
sharam ni aundi sanu gallan dindi nu
Har boli sikho sikhni vi chahidi
(It's good to learn every language)
Par pakki vekh ke kacchi nai dhai di
(But you can't just kick your own traditions because you like others)
Par pakki vekh ke kacchi nai dhai di
o Nasheyan ne pat de punjabi garbru
(Drugs have ruined Youth of India/Punjab)
kadkan hadiyan bajuan damru
(Weak bones are only producing sounds and are not of any use)
seastan ne maarli jawani chad di
(Politics or power had ruined the youth of our country)
dil mile kitten ankh kitte lad di
(Cheating and deceiving the people we love is being done)
marjaane maan na ki bharosa kal da
(Oh dear Maan(Gurdaas talking to himself), that we don't know what's coming tomorrow)
bura nai maniayan da kisi di gal da
(So why to think bad about anything or expect from someone)
keh gaye ne lok seyane
(That's what our elders taught us)
O ki Banu… O Ki banu
O ki banu …
O Ki banu duniya da
Sache patshah Waheguru jaane
Ki banu duniya da
Sache patshah Waheguru jaane
Ki banu duniya da… haye
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
Haye taariya vi teri jugni
Sai Bodaan vaalian ve jugni
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
Haye taariya vi teri jugni
Sai Bodaan vaalian ve jugni
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
Haye taariya vi teri jugni
Sai Bodaan vaalian ve jugni
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
Haye taariya vi teri jugni
Sai Bodaan vaalian ve jugni
Allah Bismilallah teri jugni
Enjoy!!!
